Pruning A Tree Branch Properly

3 Cut Pruning For Thick Tree Branches
When properly pruned, tree branches will form a callus at the location of the branch that was removed. This callus is vital to the health and growth of the tree. To prevent the bark from being damaged, most tree branches are cut to the trunk or main branch. The first two cuts are designed to remove weight from the branch and the third cut is for best callus development.
Step 1
First cut: The underside of the branch.
You should travel approximately 18 inches along the underside of your branch. It is the best place to make your first cut. About half way through the branch, cut.
Step 2
The top side of the branch is cut in the second section.
Then, move to the top of the branch. Select a spot an inch away from the first cut. Cut the branch until it breaks.
Step 3
The Third Cut Is Outside The Collar.
The branch collar is located on the trunk. The stem tissue at the base of the branches is called the collar. In this area, you will see that the bark is rougher and swollen. Your final cut should be made just outside this collar but without leaving any stub. Completely cut the tree at a 45-degree angle. This will prevent water damage and promote the rapid formation of callus.

Although summer pruning is not a very popular choice, it can sometimes be beneficial when done with care. Summer pruning is used by experienced gardeners to slow down the growth of a branch or tree. This type of pruning should be done just after seasonal growth reaches its peak. By removing all the leaves from the plant you will reduce the nutrients that are sent to the roots, and therefore the growth of the tree.
Let’s now talk about flowering trees. They don’t follow the rules. Early bloomers and later bloomers are the two main categories of flowering trees.
Early Blooming Trees
Trees that bloom early set buds on growth from last year. A tree that blooms early in 2018 will be blooming on 2017 growth. Your tree will not bloom if you prune it over the winter. Prune the tree after it has finished blooming. Early-blooming trees include the following:
Apricot
Chokecherry
Ornamental Cherry
Flowering Plum
Magnolia
Late Blooming Trees
Trees that flower in the late spring or early summer will set buds on new growth from this year. A tree that blooms in June this year will bloom on the same growth as last year. For the best possible bloom, these trees should be pruned early in spring:

Three Tree Pruning Techniques
There are several ways to improve the health of the tree and its shape. Each method aims to produce a tree that has good air and light circulation, as well as attractive qualities and strength. Crown Thinning

The thinning process should be uniform throughout the tree because the goal is to not change the size or the shape of the trees. Only remove 10-20% of the branches at the canopy edge. The end of the limbs that are between 1 and 4 inches in size can be removed from large trees. You can thin small ornamental trees, fruit trees, and other landscape trees by removing limbs that are between 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Trim trees to thin the crown so that they still look unpruned.
Crown Raising
The bottom edge of the tree limbs is raised to make room for buildings, traffic or views. This method of tree pruning should be done gradually over time. A weak tree can be caused by removing too many lower branches at once. When pruning each year, remove only a few branches with a diameter less than four inches.
I like to periodically take a step back and check the balance of the entire tree. On deciduous trees, the live crown should cover 60 percent of your tree. The tree can become weaker if the trunk starts to exceed 40 percent. The majority of conifers are strong and healthy when balanced at 50 percent crown to 50 percent trunk.
Crown Reduction
The crown reduction method is used to prune trees that are older and more mature. It can strengthen the tree, and encourage new growth. Crown reduction is the removal of a branch from a tree to reveal a lateral branch. This lateral branch becomes part of the tree crown when the spring growing season starts.
This method is a more gentle alternative to topping trees. The cuts are smaller, and less crown is removed. There’s still plenty of old growth to provide structure. Crown thinning reduces limbs and leaves, but the goal of crown-reduction is to encourage new growth by removing old growth.
Crown Cleaning
When trimming a tree, crown cleaning involves removing dead, diseased or broken branches. This can be done at any time, and is best performed as part of crown raising, thinning and reduction. Cleaning the crown of the tree strengthens it and helps prevent future damage. It also increases the safety of the landscaping.
